In a hybrid timber design, the shell of the home is designed and built using conventional techniques (e.g., stick framing, log, pre-engineered panels), then non-structural timbers are added to the finished shell to replicate the look of a timber frame structure.
This technique yields many benefits to you in terms of appearance and cost:
• you get to decide where timbers will be placed
• you can choose the timber spacing, the size, and even the wood species
• conventional framing crews can be used to build your home, as opposed to expensive specialty timber crews
• insulation, plumbing, electrical and heating are simplified as these are accomplished per conventional shell construction
• you can choose between a solid pine timber, or a hollow machined timber
• as none of the timbers are load-bearing, you can design a look that is to your liking
• the timbers can be as few, or as many as you want
In a pure timber frame construction you only have so much say in where timbers will go, how many there will be, and their size, among other things. That is because each timber is a load bearing element. In hybrid timber construction all of these constraints are removed as none of the elements bear a load. That means you have near infinite control over the final product.
The frame of the home can be covered with most any type of wall system, although generally, a structurally insulated wall panel – or SIP is used. The possibilities with Hybrid frame construction are virtually endless. Our kits feature all that is necessary to create a Hybrid House.

In a hybrid system, all timbers are attached to our conventional, energy efficient shell, and are non load-bearing. What this means is that you have much greater flexibility in choosing the shape, size, and the spacing of the timber elements. Our hybrid system can be readily applied to any of our spec models or custom designs. Furthermore, our hybrid system imposes no constraints on the energy efficiency of the structure.
